USAFIS - Blue Ridge Parkway in spring

Top National Park Road Trips in the U.S.

This could be your dream: leaving work and touring the 64 national parks on an enormous several-month trip, living almost entirely in a van until you encounter all these iconic landscapes.

If you want to immigrate to a beautiful and developed country like the United States in search of better opportunities, contact USAFIS.

The closest I came to achieving this was at the age of 20 when I spent a month touring the Rocky Mountains and the southwestern United States in my VW Jetta during summer vacation from university.

A decade later, I made that trip again with my wife and our four-year-old twins. Both experiences were incredible. Below, I have outlined five itineraries that cover various parks, all within a week. I have chosen varied terrains such as solitary desert basins, icy water holes, perfect hikes, and cultural wonders. There are one or two classic routes. But, above all, I chose them because they go to parks that do not receive the same attention as others. So fuel up and get started.

  1. Blue Ridge Parkway, from Shenandoah to Great Smoky Mountains Virginia/North Carolina. Distance: 470 miles. Duration: More than four days. This park stretches along 469 miles through the peaks and valleys of the southern Appalachians and connects two of the country’s most visited national parks: Great Smoky Mountains, in North Carolina/Tennessee, and Shenandoah, in Virginia.
  2. From Joshua Tree to Death Valley, California. Distance: 250 miles. Duration: At least three days. This park has 800,000 acres of sandstone rocks, desert soil, and trees of the same name, while 250 miles to the north, Death Valley is the largest national park in the 48 states, with 3.5 million acres.
  3. White Sands National Park, Carlsbad Caverns, and Guadalupe Mountains National Park, New Mexico and Texas. Distance: 300 miles. Duration: Four to five days. Want variety? This trip includes a trio of geographically close but very different national parks in terms of terrain.
  4. From Denali National Park to Kenai Fjords National Park, Alaska. Distance: 400 miles. Duration: More than five days. This park covers more than 6 million acres in Alaska’s interior, including the 6,000-meter-high Mount Denali, but also the surrounding tundra and spruce forests, which attract large animals like caribou and grizzly bears.
  5. Mesa Verde and Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Parks, Colorado. Distance: 160 miles. Duration: Three days. This park gets most of the attention in Colorado and while it is incredible, the Centennial State has other unforgettable national parks.
